5. A homeless man living on the streets discovers a bag full of money dropped off the back of a van.  After years of living in poverty, how will this man react to his new found riches? And what will happen when the men who owned that money find out this homeless man took their money?

Idea #5 "Mo' Money Mo' Problems"
Thomas Jones is a scruffy man in his 50's who has never had an ounce of luck in his life.  He was addicted to drugs and alcohol which led him to losing his wife and kids and everything he cared about.  Now a homeless man on the streets he has to fight one of his biggest opponents of his life, himself.  His internal battle with himself is the focal point of the film.  Thomas believes himself to be unworthy of love and happiness and must confront his fear of being unsatisfactory.  The majority of the film will be internal monologues spoken by thomas as he recollected where everything went wrong.  From the choices he made as a teenager, all the way to the the time he treated his wife and kids, the viewer will find that although Thomas has made multiple mistakes in his life, the viewers can't help but sympathize with him.  The only sympathy Thomas gets from anyone is directly attributed to the effort Thomas makes to right his wrongs.  For years Thomas has struggled with poverty and realizes that if he is going to make any change to his life he is going to need some money.  The banks would not lend him money and all of the people he used to call friends have abandoned him.  Little did Thomas know, one day would change his life forever.  After a confrontation between some very strange men occurs in a back alley, Thomas observes this from afar.  After the struggle between the unknown thugs, they run off with bags of money and throw them in the back of a truck.  The thugs believed to have grabbed all of the bags however they missed one rushing away from the scene so quickly.  This is where Thomas grabs the bag and takes off to a far away location where no one would believe him to be a suspect.  Thomas returns to his family who has now moved on since they rejected Thomas last time and their reactions change but for the wrong reasons.  They become interested only in the money and neglect to ask Thomas where he got the money from.  Their relationships, although completely fake, bring momentary happiness to Thomas.  After realizing that the relationships Thomas built with his family is strictly based on the money he provided for the family, he begins to feel unhappy again.  He begins to meditate in deep thought and notices that even though everything was taken away from him, he still was happier with nothing than he is with all this money.  He likes the solitude and finds solace in meditation.
Although the finale of this story is still a mystery i would like for the viewer to ponder on the idea of solitude and greed.  Money, just like other materialistic possessions give people momentary happiness.  What Thomas is looking for and what he has always looked for is lifelong happiness or at least something that brings him a greater happiness than material things.  What i want the viewer to notice by the end of the story is that material things can only bring you a certain amount of happiness and it is the connections and links one forms with other that creates true happiness.  This is why Thomas views his family in such high regard and would do anything to be back to his old life.  Thomas is willing to do insane things like steal a random bag of money off of the street because he loves his family that much.  My inspiration for this film comes from series like Peaky Blinders, and Breaking Bad because the main characters in each series realize that money can only buy one so much happiness. The struggles that Thomas goes through, although some are extreme, can be fairly relatable to everyone.  Everyone at some point in their lives has lost something or someone and felt that they would do anything to have what they wanted back even if that means breaking the law in this case.
The purpose of the video would be to entertain as well as educate the viewers on the idea of material possessions and how time affects multiple aspects of people's lives.  Although Thomas is broke and homeless he still manages to keep a smile on his face for the most part and a positive outlook on the future.  Thomas never gives up even after all his mistakes, he keeps pushing through adversity in hopes of reuniting with his family.  As a character, Thomas makes witty jokes and still makes him seem light hearted which is appealing to the audience for sympathy towards Thomas.

  1. Dear Brandon,

I like that you've spent some time here trying to narrow down your focus, and that you are already exploring styles that you like as inspiration. One thing that would be helpful to keep in mind is that in the time left in class, the actual concept of the video project has to be manageable. If this were a short story you were writing, you could most likely develop Thomas' story, or at least get a very good first draft done. However, since this project also has video components, you will have to deal with those constraints (i.e. you won't have time to cast an actor, write the script, shoot the film, and edit it). I suggest that you find something more manageable or something that you can illustrate with some still images/photographs/illustrations so that you're not having to learn video shooting techniques. Now, that said, if you want to pursue a fictional video story line, you can. I had one student in my last class who defied all of my suggestions and turned out a really amazing piece of work. But, I'm just letting you know that I don't expect you to produce a half hour show similar to Peaky Blinders in the six weeks we have left. Instead, maybe think a bit more about what you're most passionate about. I know I've been harping on the story you told in your first blog post about going from someone who felt on the outside of things, to someone who took control of his life and changed it, but that's because this transformation is both interesting and inspiring, and because I think for those of us who started out on the outside (I include myself in this category), going to the other side of a more accepted social status gives us an insight into what it's like to not be accepted; a certain level of sensitivity to others who may not fit in exactly. If this topic doesn't appeal to you, you can choose something else you're passionate about, but my main point is that I don't expect you to film an entire fictional piece or TV show---you can think of a more focused and personal topic that you are able to illustrate through images and scenes from your own life or experience. Let me know what you think and what other ideas you might have.
