3 Course Meal

My idea for my video project is inspired by one of my favorite things in the world, food. Everyone knows or has seen the food preparation and cooking videos on Facebook and Instagram. Because i enjoy food and cooking it, I decided to create a similar rendition of this idea. To fit the time constraints, this video will consist of the cooking and preparation of a three course meal. The first course being an appetizer, the second course being the entree, and the final course will be a dessert. The main target audience for my video would be anyone who likes food, which is pretty much everyone. The food would be prepared in a nice kitchen and supported with lighting to make the food look incredibly delicious. Some ideas i had for the first course would several coated mozzarella sticks or quesadillas. I would prepare a salmon or some chicken for the entree with some sort of side like a baked sweet potato. For the dessert some slutty brownies or triple layer chocolate lava cake could be made. The style i wanted to use for this video would be similar to most of the videos i saw on Facebook. I would record all of the footage of me cooking and have some fun music in the background and i would not say a word the whole video. I would have to do a lot of editing to prompt the audience what ingredients are being presented and how much of each ingredient is being used. The audience would be informed as to what instruments and tools i use in the kitchen. Although this video can be used to teach the audience how to cook these courses, however the main purpose of the video would be to visually please the viewers. Slow panning videos and still frames of the food with proper lighting would make the food look even more delicious. I am extremely interested in food and enjoy methodically cooking and enjoying great meals. This video would express my love for food and hopefully grab someones attention and give them a proper appreciation for cooking and food in general.

Dear Brandon,
ReplyDeleteI appreciate the ambition of this project, and I too enjoy the videos on Tasty--simple, fun, easy, upbeat. However, you have to figure out how to tell a story somehow (this is a writing class, not a movie production class). That doesn't mean that you can't use this idea of showing a recipe being made, but it does mean that it has to have an aspect of it that is your story or a story of some kind. I am glad that you've chosen a style--but now...How can you weave that idea of making a specific meal into a second level, bigger picture video essay? Is there something that you make all the time because it's healthy? Can you find a way to incorporate your own eating habits into the video so that you can tell your health journey? You could inter splice a recipe of some kind with positive habits that you've developed, eating or otherwise. Lots of really sophisticated writers use recipes or how-tos to tell their stories. I'm thinking of books such as Like Water for Chocolate or Heartburn or Eat, Pray, Love and movies like Big Night where food and meals are a huge part of the story, and often symbolize something bigger. Food for some is a substitute for love or connection, or it's a symbol of how we nourish our bodies, or how well we do or don't take care of ourselves. So, keep in mind that you will have to have some portion of this that explores a part of yourself or our culture or the love of cooking that is narrative and well thought-out. In a way, this is easier than learning the movie technique of fast-forwarding or shooting from above or getting your lighting right to film in a kitchen. It's not that you can't do that--you can--but that I don't expect you to create polished films so much as thoughtful stories that are told visually. Get something on the page about your relationship to food and why you love it so much. Figure that out, and you'll uncover more about what the story is.
