My First Memory
Looking back, Brandon's first memory that he remembers was when he was 6 years old. It was a hot summer day and Brandon's birthday finally came around and he was excited to go to six flags with his brother Daniel, his sister Cristina, and his mother Naty.
On the ride there, Brandon remembers yelling and crying about being hungry and as he was crying over his addiction to McDonalds, a large deer came running out of the woods from the right side of the car. The deer came charging at the car and as Brandon's mom pushed down on the brakes, the deer went flying. The deer surprisingly grazed the car and barely damaged the front hood. Brandon, his brother and his sister got out of the car along with his mother to check on the now dead deer lying on the road with its eyes rolled back and tongue laying just out of its mouth.
Brandon's mom called animal control and they came to take the dead deer off of the road. After the deer was taken away by animal control, Brandon and his family decided to keep driving to six flags. About a half an hour passes after the accident with the deer. Brandon and his family are now about ten minutes from the park when the unthinkable happens. Another wild deer hops out of the woods again!
Trembling in fear, Brandon's mom does not reacts fast as she did the first time. The car doesn't brake until after completely running over the second deer. Not only did they go through tragedy, but they had to go through the same tragedy twice! "Where the hell are all these deer coming from?!", exclaimed Cristina, Brandon's sister, as she opened the car door to check on this deer. Brandon's mom called animal control once again and they came within five minutes of hearing about the accident. Brandon remember's that the same animal control worker who showed up from the first accident, came to pick up the second dead deer. Brandon's mother was so shaken up from not just one accident but two accidents that she made the call to turn around and go home. With the car now totaled from the second deer incident, Brandon and his family made their way back to Wallington and even though they were five minutes away from six flags, they never made it to the park with the car intact.
Although Brandon fell asleep in the rental car that came to pick up the distressed family, he remembers waking up on the couch at home. Later that day Brandon's mother gathered all three of her children and began to apologize for what had happened that day. To make up for not making it to the park, Naty took all of her kids out for dinner to Brandon's favorite restaurant, Red Robins and after saw a movie at the local movie theatre. Brandon will never forget that dreadful day where he was literally minutes away from having the best birthday ever but that day was ruined by two deer who just had to run in front of Naty's light grey mini van. Thats how Brandon got his fear of deer.

Dear Brandon,
ReplyDeleteI like the concept of this a lot. It's almost hard to believe that the mom character (your mom) actually hit and killed two deer in the same day. But it's interesting. What does it mean? If you had to come up with a meaning for this, like, if you were making this story up, what would the coincidence of two deer being killed and ruining your main character's day (not getting to go to Six Flags) have in terms of a deeper meaning? This is what's complicated in fiction. We assume that as a writer who is constructing a fictional story, you've decided to give us two dead deer and a failed outing. We will want to understand what the bigger picture is here--what it means. For example, what does this say about the mom character? Was she distracted that day? Was she trying to distract her kids from something bigger? I understand that this is based on a real experience, and so it could just be a coincidence, but if you were creating the story, you would determine why this action happened. That's complicated. We'll talk more about this in class.
